Videoconference News.ro – Agriculture reloaded
Romania’s agriculture has been, in recent years, an engine of economic growth, but the stage of general development and business in the field are not yet at the level of those in developed countries. In recent years, record productions have been recorded for various crops, amid good weather conditions and many private initiatives developed with enthusiasm by farmers have been highlighted. The capitalization of agricultural products is generally based on raw materials both domestically and for export and not on finished products that add value to those in the field, agriculture in general and the Romanian economy.
The event aims to offer new solutions for growing the agricultural business, from the organization of work and the chain of processing and capitalization of products to new technologies in agriculture and financing and development solutions. The agricultural business must in some cases be rethought as well as developed and that is why we propose: Agriculture Reloaded.
At the event we will also discuss the measures taken by companies in the current crisis generated by the coronavirus epidemic to support Romanian products, but also those that can be taken in this regard at the national strategic level through government programs.
In recent years, agriculture has recorded better and better results, the records being in 2018.
Agriculture represents 4.1% of Romania’s GDP. In 2019, Romania produced 29.5 million tons of cereals, down 6.5% from the record level of 31.6 million tons in 2018.
Romania ranks first in the European Union in corn production and in the production and area cultivated by sunflowers. In wheat, Romania ranked fourth, in terms of cultivated area, as well as potatoes.
The agricultural trade balance is unbalanced by animal husbandry, because self-consumption is satisfied only in the proportion of 26-27% of domestic production. Last year, Romania had a herd of 3.9 million pigs, but a large part of the piglets fattened in Romania come from imports. Animal husbandry needs investment.
The year 2020 was marked first by drought and then by floods, in addition to the onset of the coronavirus crisis. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, about 1.6 million hectares were affected by the drought.
